I absolutely love berry season! There’s just nothing like the taste of fresh picked berries! I have loads of them growing in my garden, and what better way to enjoy them than this simple berry sauce.
Berries are also loaded with health properties. High in fiber, and antioxidants, they are a food product you’ll want to make a part of your daily diet.
This sauce is absolutely scrumptious! It’s a tasty and healthy alternative to maple syrup for our weekend pancakes or waffles. It’s also a delicious berry compote for cheesecake! And it’s heavenly spooned over my homemade vanilla ice cream!
What do I need to make this berry sauce?
This berry sauce couldn’t be easier. It’s made from just 4 simple ingredients:
- Berries – blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, marionberries, or any combination of them. Fresh or frozen berries can be used.
- Sugar – I used organic sugar in my sauce. Alternatively, you could use maple syrup, coconut sugar, or agave nectar
- Cornstarch – to thicken the sauce. If you are sensitive to corn, you can use arrowroot powder
- Water
How to make this sauce
Place the berries, 1/4 cup of water, and the sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil. You can mash some of the berries, if you desire.
In a small cup, mix together the corn starch and the remaining water. Pour this into the pot of berries, and stir until the mixture is thickened.
How can I use this berry sauce?
- Use it as a fruit topping for cheesecake.
- Enjoy it as a fruit sauce for pancakes or waffles.
- Top a bowl of ice cream or use as an ice cream sundae topping.
- Stir some into a cup of vegan yogurt.
- Make a parfait by layering vegan yogurt, berry sauce, and granola.
How long will this sauce last?
This berry sauce will keep for up to a week in a covered container in your refrigerator. It can also be frozen for up to 3 months.

Thank you!! I ran out of Cranberry sauce and was making a chicken roast dinner. I used a frozen mixed berry pack and only used half the sugar- and no strawberry’s. I made it a bit thicker then put it through the blender. Awesome!! I now have it in a jar in the fridge!! Delicious!!
Wonderful! I’m glad you enjoyed it and was able to make it work for your meal. BTW, I also have a cranberry orange sauce on my site.
hi there, how much (in mililitres) does this recipe make? does anyone know?
What is the best way to freeze this yummy sauce? Is it ok in a bowl or should I let it cool and put in a ziploc bag and lay flat in the freezer?
I’ve never frozen it, but I would try freezing it in an airtight bowl or jar. A ziploc could also work.
Excellent! Made for cheesecake topping and added a squeeze of fresh lemon juice as someone recommended.
Great recipe. Added a splash of vanilla extract after cooking. ????????????????
I’m going to make this over cheesecake. I’d like to include raspberries with my strawberries, blueberries & blackberries. My question is regarding seeds from raspberries …. how are they eliminated since all cook together or is it not a big deal since other berries are being used?
I don’t worry about seeds, but you can always puree the sauce in a high speed blender before thickening with the corn starch or press it through a fine mesh strainer.
I’m wondering about trying this with a tropical mixture of mango and peach?
That sounds tasty!
It worked awesome! Served over whole wheat French vanilla yogurt pancakes with chopped pecans. Next time I would add mashed banana to the pancakes to makes them perfect.
Absolutely delicious!!!! And simple to make! I will definitely make it again. 🙂
Sorry, nevermind on my question, I see that this can be frozen! I am making it now thank you for this recipe!
I literally just finished making this sauce. It is amazing! I used fresh strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries. I also a little honey. Ms. Teresa, I would like to know the best way to reheat. Also, I presume storing in an air-tight container is ideal. Thank you, for such an easy and delicious recipe.
I’m so glad you’re enjoying this recipe! You can reheat it in the microwave on medium high, stirring every 30 seconds until it is heated, or in a small pot on the stove over medium low heat, stirring frequently. And yes, I would store it in an air tight container.
Made this sauce for a cheesecake it is amazing! I added a squeeze of Lemon juice it was a little sweet at first! This recipient is perfect ????
Hello, I make meals in advance for my MIL, portioned out. Could this be frozen when I freeze her breakfasts for the week? Thank you!
Made this to serve over cheesecake. It’s a perfect sauce that I will definitely make again!
If serving over waffles would you do so room temperature or warm the sauce?
I like to make the sauce while the waffles are cooking and serve it hot over the waffles. But it’s totally up to you!
Thanks 4 this easy & delish recipe! My family loved it !
Delicious AND easy!!! Why haven’t I been doing this with berries my whole life?!? Lol. I will add my cornstarch gradually next time, this first attempt ended up slightly too thick. My fruit was a probably under ripe and had a bit less juice than you’d expect.
Used frozen berries. Turned out delish!!
Made today with frozen raspberries to top a slice of pound cake with vanilla ice cream scoop. Great substitute for strawberry short cake when there are no fresh strawberries! Can’t wait to try with pancakes or waffles. Delicious!
This was so easy to make.
Perfect with yogurt and granola.
My new go-to berry sauce recipe! I used frozen cherry berry blend and it was OUTTA SIGHT!! Ate it over Greek yogurt for dessert. Yum! Thanks for a great recipe!
This berry sauce is SO delicious! I love it on pancakes, waffles, and ice cream! I bet it would also be really tasty in some yogurt–and perhaps even on some biscuits!
I’ve had this berry sauce over pancakes many times and it has never disappointed! I can’t get the idea of spooning it hot over vanilla ice cream out of my head and will definitely have to try it!
Thanks, Randi! And yes, the hot berry sauce over vanilla ice cream is heavenly!
