I love mashed potatoes, and I’ve shared my recipe for my wonderful Vegan Garlic Mashed Potatoes. While these potatoes are delicious enough to eat on their own, they’re even better with a declicious gravy!

What’s a holiday feast without gravy? This is the perfect gravy recipe for your Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. But I’ll eat mashed potatoes and gravy any time!

Traditional gravies are full of saturated fat and meat drippings. Not this one! Vegans can eat wonderful gravy without meat products or fat and still have all the delicious flavor.

This vegan version is a perfect substitute for chicken gravy or turkey gravy. And it’s so quick and easy to make!

What’s in this gravy?

  • Vegetable broth – I like to use Better Than Bouillon No Chicken Base, but this does have a very small amount of oil, so feel free to use your favorite vegetable broth.
  • Whole wheat pastry flour – you can use all purpose flour, or for a gluten free gravy use brown rice flour or a 1 to 1 gluten free flour blend
  • Nutritional yeast – to add an umami flavor
  • Poultry seasoning
  • Onion powder
  • Garlic powder
  • Dried sage
  • Black pepper

How to Make Vegan Gravy

Most vegan gravy recipes begin with a roux of vegan butter and flour. But not this one. The butter isn’t necessary.

Making this Vegan Golden Gravy couldn’t be easier!

Step 1: Place all the ingredients into a medium sauce pan and whisk them together.

Step 2: Heat and stir the gravy over medium heat until the mixture comes to a boil and is thickened.

Then spoon it over everything! It’s so good, you’re going to be licking the spoon!

Variations

  • Vary the herbs and seasonings to create different flavors of gravy.
  • If you want a brown gravy, add a bit of dark soy sauce.
  • Add in some sauteed diced onion or mushrooms.

Serving suggestions

This easy vegan gravy is so delicious, you’re going to want to put it on everything! Pour it over your vegan mashed potatoes, stuffing, and lentil loafs. Serve it with vegan turkey, and other vegan roasts. It would also be amazing over some baked fries – how about vegan poutine?

Storage

Store leftover gravy in a jar or covered container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. It can also be frozen for up to 3 months.

Frequently asked questions

How can I thicken gravy without flour?

If you don’t want to use wheat based or gluten free flour, cornstarch and arrowroot are good gluten free substitutes. Mix it with a bit of water to form a slurry. Pour it into your gravy and heat until thickened, stirring constantly. Use approximately one tablespoon for every tablespoon of liquid in the recipe.

Does poultry seasoning contain poultry?

No, it doesn’t. Poultry seasoning is completely vegan. It’s simply a blend of seasonings including sage, thyme, rosemary, and other herbs and spices. It is often used during the holidays to flavor stuffing and other holiday dishes.

Can this gravy be made ahead?

Yes! This gravy can be made a few days in advance. It might thicken a bit when it is refrigerated, but it should thin out when it is reheated. If it doesn’t thin enough, you can mix in a bit of water or vegetable broth to achieve your desired consistency.
