I love getting new kitchen gadgets. I recently learned about a new toy I just had to have. A waffle fry cutter! If you have trouble finding this cutter, here’s a mandoline food slicer has a blade that will also cut waffle fries!

I always thought waffle fries were a fun french fry shape, but I never buy them because of all the oil. When I found out that I could make my own waffle fries without oil, I was so excited!

I didn’t realize until I received the waffle fry cutter that it did not come with the food holder that protects the fingers. Apparently you can order the food holder separately, but I couldn’t wait that long to try out this new toy.

Luckily for me, my family had given me a cut resistant glove as a gift shortly after I purchased my first professional chef’s knife. They were worried I was going to cut off a finger tip. I learned very good knife handling and safety skills in the Rouxbe cooking course I completed last year, so I didn’t really need the glove. But it definitely came in handy with this waffle fry cutter.

How to cut homemade waffle fries

To use this cutter, pass the potato over the crinkle blade. Then turn the potato one quarter of a turn before each pass across the blade. This creates perfect criss-cut fries!

How to season your waffle fries

Toss your waffle fries with your favorite seasoning salt before cooking. When I first made these fries, I used Trader Joe’s Seasoning Salt, but it has since been discontinued.

If you don’t have a favorite seasoned salt recipe, try my French Fry Seasoning. It’s easy to make in minutes with spices you likely have in your pantry. And you can adjust it to your preferred salt level (even salt free) and your favorite spices and herbs.

How long do you cook waffle fries in the air fryer?

When placing the potato slices in the air fryer, make sure that they are placed so that the slices don’t fit together.

I cooked my fries for about 10 to 15 minutes. For even cooking, I stirred the fries after the first 5 minutes, and every 2 or three minutes after that. My air fryer can cook the equivalent of about two potatoes of fries at a time.

Factors in how they cook:

  • The fries may take more or less time to cook depending on the thickness of the slices.
  • A fuller basket of fries will take longer to cook than one that is less full. Redistribute your fries a few times during cooking. Some will be done before others, and can be removed from the air fryer as they are done cooking, leaving the others in to cook longer.
  • Different brands of air fryers will cook at different temperatures. As you become familiar with your particular air fryer, you will have a better idea of how long it takes to cook these waffle fries.
  • If you are cooking more than one batch of fries, the first batch will take a little longer to cook than the following batches. This is because the air fryer will be pre-heated for the next batches.

The fries turned out perfect! So crisp, light, and tasty!

These fries are best eaten as soon as they come out of the air fryer. They would be a great accompaniment for my black bean burgers, my chickpea burgers, my soy curl subs, or my Italian sausage sandwich. Serve them with ketchup or this delicious chipotle sauce.
