What is Cinco de Mayo?
Contrary to what many people believe, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independance Day. Rather, it the celebration of Mexico’s victory over France in the the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 during the Franco-American war.
In this battle, 2,000 mostly untrained Mexican soldiers defeated 6,000 French troops. This victory bolstered the resistance movement in Mexico.
Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated as widely in Mexico as it is in the United States. In Mexico, it is primarly celebrated in Puebla, where the battle took place. In the U.S., Cinco de Mayo is celebrated as a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage.
