What are Butler Soy Curls and how are they made?
Soy curls are an amazing meat substitute product that are made right here in Oregon by Butler Foods. They are made from 100% non-GMO soy beans. The beans are cooked until they’re soft, broken into strands, and dehydrated.
How do you cook Butler Soy Curls?
To use the soy curls, it is suggested to re-hydrate them in hot water, then cook them in your chosen seasonings or sauces. The soy curl themselves have very little flavor, but take on the flavor of whatever you season them with. They have a texture that is very similar to chicken.
Are Soy Curls good for me?
Soy curls are made from whole soybeans for an excellent source of protein – 10 grams of protein per serving! Obviously, if you are sensitive to soy, you should avoid them.
They are a great alternative to many of the vegan meat substitutes out there that are highly processed and full of chemical ingredients.

Where do I find Butler Soy Curls?
Here in the Portland area, Butler Soy Curls are sold at Whole Foods, New Seasons, Natural Grocers, and Food Fight. They can also be purchased on Amazon. If you fall in love with soy curls like I did, it’s most economical to buy a bulk box directly through Butler Foods.
Be sure to store the soy curls in the refrigerator or freezer, as they have no preservatives and can become rancid.
How to make this BBQ Soy Curl Sandwich
To use the soy curls, they must first be re-hydrated. Do this by putting putting them in a bowl and pouring hot water or broth over them. Allow them to sit in the liquid for about 10 minutes.
While the soy curls are soaking, mix up the ingredients for barbecue sauce. If you don’t want to make your own barbecue sauce, you can use your favorite bottled barbecue sauce. Make sure to check the ingredients to make sure there is no Worcestershire sauce, as it usually contains anchovies.
Drain the soy curls, and squeeze out most of the liquid.
Place the soy curls in a large nonstick skillet and pour the barbecue sauce over them. Saute them on medium heat, until the soy curls start to get crispy and brown on the edges.
Make up a batch of my Vegan Coleslaw. To save time, use a bag of coleslaw mix from the store. The coleslaw can be made in advance, even the day before.
Pile the soy curls onto a bun, along with some coleslaw. You can also include some pickle or onion slices in your sandwich.

- 1 8 oz package Butler Soy Curls
- 1 cup ketchup
- 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 3 tablespoons maple syrup
- 2 tablespoons molasses
- 2 tablespoons vegan Worcestershire sauce
- 1 ½ teaspoons onion powder
- 1 ½ teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon liquid smoke
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ⅜ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 recipe Vegan Coleslaw
- 8 whole wheat burger buns
- Place the soy curls in a bowl and pour hot water over them. Allow them to sit in the liquid for about 10 minutes.
- While the soy curls are soaking, mix up the ingredients for barbecue sauce. If you don't want to make your own barbecue sauce, you can use your favorite bottled barbecue sauce. Be sure to check the ingredients to make sure your barbecue sauce is vegan.
